SA: City speed limit to be cut to 50kph in SA

ADELAIDE, Feb 12 AAP - South Australians would not be living in a state of confusiondespite three different speed limits applying in urban areas from next month, the stategovernment said today.

Transport Minister Michael Wright today announced the default statewide urban speedlimit would be 50kph from March 1, reduced from 60kph.

But some councils which have already introduced 40kph speed limits in their areas wouldbe allowed to maintain them, while all councils would also be allowed to nominate streetsto remain at 60kph.

Asked whether having three different speed zones would create confusion among motorists,Mr Wright said he did not expect so.

"I don't believe it will be," he told reporters.

"This is no different to 60 (kph), except that it's going to be 50 (kph).

"When we go out and drive at the moment, we don't look at signs in regard to localstreets, we know it's 60.

"It's going to be the same when we change to 50. People will get used to the fact thatlocal streets will be 50."

And he was hopeful that councils which already had 40kph speed limits would eventuallychange them to 50kph, although he said the government would not enforce such a change.

"Those councils that are reduced to 40, they will be able to make their own decisionsin time as to what they think are the effects of the 50kph default zones," he said.

Mr Wright said evidence from interstate and overseas indicated the change would resultin a significant reduction in injuries and deaths.

He said a three-month grace period would apply for motorists to become familiar withthe changed speed limits.
