Fed: Aussies eating out less - survey
SYDNEY, Dec 12 AAP - Hungry Aussies are shying away from dining out and opting to stayhome to eat, a new survey shows.
Restaurants across the country are feeling the pinch as people also spend less whenthey do go out, according to the HSBC Restaurant Survey released today.
The survey quizzed 120 restaurateurs selected from the Australian Gourmet Traveller Guide 2003.
It found 82 per cent of restaurateurs said business was harder this year compared tolast, while 54 per cent thought people were eating out less.
When asked if they would set up a new restaurant in the current economic climate, 67per cent either said no or they were unsure.
Just under half - 49 per cent - thought dining turnout was directly related to theups and downs of the share market.
Editor of the Australian Gourmet Traveller, Judy Sarris, said the huge number of restaurantsto choose from made business all the harder.
"Couple this with the fact that the international tourist trade has been down and peopleare in a nesting mood and you can understand why some restaurants are feeling the pinch,"
she said.
Other reasons for the decline included the increase in "value" or affordable diningand the rise of casual rather than fine dining.
